Digital euro: SAP Fioneer brings the second ledger into the core banking platform

Published on: 28 September 2026

Standard software helps financial institutions prepare for digital euro implementation while leveraging existing core banking investments.

Walldorf, Germany – September 28, 2026 – As preparations for the digital euro advance across Europe, banks are approaching a critical planning phase. With first issuance targeted for 2029, key technology, operational and investment decisions are increasingly moving into banks’ 2027 budget cycles.

At Sibos 2026, SAP Fioneer, a leading provider of software solutions and platforms for financial services, is showcasing how financial institutions can prepare for these requirements through its Digital Euro Hub. The standard software provides a standardized approach to digital euro readiness while enabling banks to build on existing technology investments and operating models.

The digital euro can be seen as cash in an app. As a digital form of central bank money, it will coexist with commercial bank money and introduce new operational requirements for financial institutions. Banks will need to manage a second ledger for central bank money while maintaining continuous synchronization with customers’ existing current accounts.

Implications extend beyond payments. Customer onboarding under the one-account-per-citizen rule, wallet management, holding limits, funding and defunding processes all need to operate alongside the current accounts, core banking systems and payment infrastructures that banks already run today.

SAP Fioneer’s Digital Euro Hub provides a standardized approach to managing these requirements within existing banking landscapes. The solution links digital euro wallets with customers’ current accounts and supports capabilities across access, liquidity and transaction management. Covering both the distributing and acquiring side of the digital euro, it connects to and extends the existing core banking and payments infrastructure of banks rather than requiring institutions to replace them.

“The digital euro requires banks to integrate a new form of central bank money into their existing technology and operating models,” said Dr. Christoph Rösch, Co-CEO Banking at SAP Fioneer. “Our Digital Euro Hub provides a standardized approach to digital euro readiness, allowing banks to focus on implementation and customer experience rather than building and maintaining bespoke infrastructure.”

By addressing digital euro requirements in a standard software environment, financial institutions can reduce implementation complexity, increase planning predictability and focus resources on areas that differentiate their business. At the same time, they can leverage existing core banking investments while preparing for future regulatory and technical requirements.

The Digital Euro Hub will continue to evolve alongside developments in the European regulatory and technical framework, helping banks prepare for digital euro adoption while extending and protecting their existing banking technology landscape.

SAP Fioneer is showcasing the Digital Euro Hub at Sibos 2026 in Miami Beach, stand I054, September 28 to October 1. Carlos Figueredo, Global Head of Payments at SAP Fioneer, will speak on “From Concept to Reality: Enabling Banks for the Digital Euro” on Monday, September 28, from 9:00 to 9:30am on Exhibitor Stage 2 (ES2).
